For example, Volkswagen’s Touareg SUV uses the IQ.LIGHT — LED Matrix Headlamps, developed together with auto-supplier Hella. What’s more, the all-new BMW 3 Series features all-LED ambient lighting which uses positioned LED fiber-optic light guides.

At the same time, companies such as ZKW are developing headlights for autonomous driving. ZKW has integrated high-resolution cameras into the headlights of the Project Dragonfly test vehicle. The headlights are placed strategically to provide a 360 degree view of the vehicle using sensor systems.

Innovation in Lighting for passenger wellness and personalization

As developments continue to progress from assisted driving to automated driving, the unique selling points are shifting towards personalized passenger well being. Lighting is becoming an integral part of the passenger cabin taking on functional and design-specific tasks.

In this direction, players are collaborating to expand their capabilities, as demonstrated by Faurecia and Hella which partnered on interior lighting solutions for the interior surface for the “Cockpit of the Future”. Faurecia will provide complete system integration and Hella will provide interior lighting products.

Automotive suppliers are finding new space for integration of lighting and they are even working to personalize it so that it can store preferences and work accordingly. For example ISELED that can save the last lighting settings in the memory chip and hence provide lighting according to driver requirements.

Finally, the ambient lighting system can be integrated with emotional state recognition of the occupant so as to provide mood lighting according to the emotional state of the occupant.
