EU sets PFAS limits in food packaging and bans single-use plastics for fresh produce
What happened?
The EU has introduced new plastic packaging and waste rules that limit polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food packaging and ban single-use plastics for certain fruits and veggies. The regulations (EU 2025/40, Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)) will start transitioning in phases, beginning on August 12, 2026. All EU Member States must strictly follow the regulation.
Why It Matters.
| This regulation sets strict limits on PFAS in food packaging and reduces single-use plastic in fresh produce and food services, pushing for more recyclable and reusable solutions. | “EU’s new regulations are a game-changer, forcing brands to rethink packaging. With the tight deadline for compliance, it will make packaging innovation a key priority for 2025.” |
This means…
- Food manufacturers must shift to PFAS-free, sustainable packaging
- There must be new innovations in compostable, recyclable, or biodegradable materials
- Stronger partnerships with suppliers and sustainability leaders
