The increasing demand for oil and gas has led to a continuous exploration in deep sea. With the pressure rising to several hundred psi, corrosive environment around and the challenges encountered in transporting heavy parts and components have meant that there is increasingly a need of superior alternatives to steel in tubular applications.
This paper discusses the trend of composites as potential alternative to the conventional steel used in tubular applications like pipelines, risers and drill pipes in the offshore oil and gas industry. The unmatched advantages of doing so are; less frequent repairs, huge cost on savings and ease of transportation and handling. Regardless of the advantages that it brings, there are barriers like high fabrication costs and limited industry expertise that need to be overcome.
